Detailing Group was founded over 25 years ago by David Ball, who saw — while working at another firm — that the steel detailing industry needed a more progressive approach. Better drawings. Cleaner data transfer. Real project management. A small team with senior people on every job.

David set out to build that firm. The mission was simple: streamline the detailing and fabrication process by using the best tools the industry had to offer — and by personally managing every project that came through the door.

Two and a half decades later, the mission hasn't changed. The tools have: Tekla Structures has matured into the industry standard. CNC integration is now table stakes. BIM coordination has become a daily reality. Through all of it, Detailing Group has stayed Tekla-native, principal-led, and stubbornly focused on the only output that matters: a drawing the shop can trust.

In 2004, David won first place in the Tekla Structures Modeling Competition for the Ko Residence — and continued placing in subsequent years. The award is on the wall. What it represents — modeling precision, dimensional discipline, drawing clarity — is on every project that has left the office since.
